The Benefits and History of Massage
Traditional Thai Massage
The beneficial effects of massage have been known for thousands of years across many different cultures.
Some of the potential benefits of massage:
- Increases blood and lymph flow
- Decreases muscle tension
- Improves mobility
- Reduces blood pressure and heart rate
- Reduces level of stress hormones and increases energy
Writings on massage have been found in many ancient civilizations including Roman, Grecian, Egyptian, Mesopotamian, Indian, Chinese and Japanese. Historically, the first documented evidence of massage was 5000 years ago, based on knowledge of the meridian lines, pathways of energy and the balance of ying/yang (positive/negative energy).
The Maori had highly developed massage techniques prior to the arrival of European settlers. Maori massage addresses the whole person, mind, body and spirit. There is a strong emphasis on infant massage. The whole whanau (family) is considered, including ancestors.
Pehr Henrik Ling (1776-1839) is credited with devising the Swedish system of massage, which includes effleurage, petrissage and tapotement (see Relaxation Massage).
Every therapist develops a unique indidvidual style of massage, whichever discipline he or she follows. Even this style will change subtly depending on the client and the issues that they present with.

and finally... The Pussy Cat Technique
While there is a massage technique called the "pussy cat", the little fella in the picture doesn't have it quite right!
In Swedish relaxation massage, the "pussy cat" comprises of slow, sometimes deep, compressions to the top of each shoulder alternately. In a relaxed state this can be deeply satisfying and the degree of movement in each shoulder gives a good indication as to how relaxed the client is and whether any tension still remains.
